Our antique brass door knockers are natural brass that has been that have been hand finished to resemble an aged brass finish.
This finish is available on all of our solid brass door knockers.
All finish work is performed in our own studio.
The surface of the casting's natural brass gold tone is machine buffed smooth and hand polished.
An abrasive media is used to dull the surface and create a horizontal grain across the casting. The door knocker now has the appearance of a satin brass finish. A little more work is needed to create our antique brass door knockers.
At this stage the door knocker is engraved. The engraving cuts shiny smooth lines that contrast with the satin finished brass surface.
After engraving the unit is oxidized to a dark brown to black color. An antique door knocker surface needs to vary from light to dark areas. A very fine abrasive is used to lightly polish the oxidized surface leaving the highlights a nice honey brownish gold and the details dark brown to black.
This surface provides great contrast for engraving. Because we engrave before we oxidize the engraving stands out well on the surface and is easily read.
The final step is to apply a protective clear lacquer coating. This prevents tarnish and weathering of the surface. It is important that the lacquer be applied as the last step. If the door knocker is engraved after the lacquer is applied the raw metal will be exposed where the engraving is and tarnish will soon follow.
The finished products are personalized solid brass door knockers that will grace any home.
