The door kick plate is installed on the lower section of the door primarily to prevent damage caused by people passing through. A beneficial secondary purpose is that it adds beauty and decoration to the doorway. A door kick plate that matches the other door hardware is a very attractive addition to the entranceway.

It is attached to the lower portion of the door by either screws, adhesive or magnetic material for steel doors.

Open Door The kick plate should be purchased at least 2" shorter that the door is wide. It is important that it does not interfere with the door stops or weather stripping surrounding the door. 2" shorter allows approximately 1" on either side of clearance.

You must also allow room at the bottom of the door so the kick plate does not come into contact with the sill. It is best to measure the closed door dimensions on the side with the door stops and any weather stripping to be sure your kick plate does not interfere with the operation of the door.

Kick Plate Location The usual practice is to allow the same amount of room at the bottom of the door as is at the sides. This allows a uniform appearance on the door.

The common mounting method is with screws for wood doors. I like to use tacks lightly stuck through the corner holes into the wood to get the kick plate properly located. I can then put screws in the inner holes and them replace the tacks with screws last.

Adhesive mount is the most difficult. You must have the plate properly located right from the get-go, you may not get another chance once the adhesive comes into contact with the door.

The easiest mount is the magnetic. This only works on steel doors. Because it is easy to stick on it is also easy to steal so you may want to think about his if your neck of the woods has things that come up missing.

We offer door kick plates in two heights, 6" and 8" and in four lengths, 28" 30" 32" and 34". This range will cover most residential doors in use today.

The door kick plate is specially packaged to prevent damage in shipping. It has a clear protective plastic film on the front side that must be removed during installation.
